Kidney cancer may be a silent cancer only getting detected because the person undergoes a CT scan or sonography for some other reason or during a health check up. Kidney cancer may cause blood in the urine or passing clots in the urine or both. There may sometimes be severe pain in the side of the abdomen and back (“clot colic”- The blood from the tumor forms a clot which blocks urine flow and causes severe abdominal and back pain).

Diagnosing kidney cancer first involves a CT scan (Triphasic CT KUB) or an MRI. Basic blood and urine tests are needed as well. Some patients in addition may need bone scans to look for any spread to bones or chest CT scans to look for spread to lungs before planning treatment.
Unlike other urological cancers, biopsy is not done in kidney cancer except only in very rare conditions like tumors in both kidneys or some doubt about the tumor having spread from somewhere else to the kidney.

Treatment involves either Radical nephrectomy (Removal of the kidney) or Partial nephrectomy (Partly removing the kidney, also called Nephron Sparing Surgery). The decision of radical nephrectomy or partial nephrectomy surgery is based on tumor size, location of the tumor within the kidney, involvement of kidney arteries and veins by tumor, health of opposite kidney and thus cannot be generalized for all patients.
This surgery is done by laparoscopy, robotic or open methods and all are just as equally effective in curing the cancer. Laparoscopy is associated with quicker recovery after surgery.
