Biopsy is the process to remove a small bit of the prostate under local anaesthesia. This is done when there may be a doubt about prostate cancer either during examination of the prostate or when a PSA blood test is abnormal or if there is a family history of prostate cancer.
A systematic 12 or 14 core Trans Rectal Ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy is the gold standard or ideal method and the tissue is sent for histopathological examination (HPE). This facility is available in the Ultrasound unit at our centre which houses the most advanced GE Voluson 4D sonography unit.
